Simple things that often help
Most coughs from a cold settle by themselves within a week or two. These everyday steps can make you more comfortable while you recover.
- Drink warm water, soups or herbal teas through the day.
- Rest, and keep your throat and room air from drying out. Steam from a bowl of hot water can feel soothing, so keep a safe distance.
- Avoid smoke, dust and very cold drinks.
- Honey in warm water is a popular home remedy for adults and for children older than one year. Never give honey to babies under one year.
Herbs traditionally used in Ayurveda
Ayurveda has long used certain herbs for throat and chest comfort. These are traditional uses, not medical treatments, and individual results vary.
- Tulsi (holy basil): often taken as a warm tea.
- Mulethi (liquorice root): traditionally used to soothe the throat.
- Ginger: commonly taken with honey or in tea.
- Vasa (adulsa): a classical herb used in traditional cough formulations.
When to see a doctor
Home care is only for mild, short-lived coughs. Please see a doctor if you or your child has:
- A cough lasting more than two to three weeks.
- Difficulty breathing, wheezing or chest pain.
- Coughing up blood, or high or lasting fever.
- A cough in a young baby, in pregnancy, or alongside a long-term condition.
